In der Låmba

In der Låmba

A Kappe, a brick, the story(ies) of the name of the village, an old clock and some documents of the weberei are the main objects of this room. These objects speak about the identity of the place, the physical and mental place. Låmba is the local name of the village in the local dialect, this is why we used this word for the title of the room.

Besides the objects, we have gathered some oral stories and archives (music in the case of this Kammer) which give another layer to the visual material. The exhibition device is made of different tables in different highs. Some of then are showcase tables.

This room is organized in three spaces: the first one tells some stories of the origin of the village. One of them is about Ebense, the name of the village, which is related to the physical appearance: a plane in front of a lake, enclosed into mountains. This closure and the difficulty to access is present in some legends as well.

A brick tells the story of the different transformations of the two main factories: Solvay and Salinen Austria. The two had to move because a fire (Saline Austria) or to modernize and during this process some inhabitants used bricks from the factory to built their hauses. The relevant fact is that these bricks were full of salt and this salt attracted humidity in the houses. The bricks took the identity of the factory with them in a certain way.

In the back of the room there is a space to tell the story of the other factory in Ebensee: the Weberei. It was a factory which employed a lot of women. We got into this story thanks to a clock, which was stopped when the factory closed: five minutes to twelve. We also got some documents and pictures given by Mrs Engel: a picture of the kindergarden in the factory (in really early times!), some pictures of working people and the documents of the closure. The unemployment women seemed to be invisible.

There is another story about the Kappe. There is a specific post for it in the web.
